I am in the process of configuring a new laptop. It has two hard drives and
I want to restore several of my large databases to files on both hard
drives, even though the original dbs on my old laptop are single-file.
Anyone know a secret that will allow you to restore a single-file database
to spread it's data over two files during the restore'

I'm affraid you cannot do that. As SQL Server needs to restore/attach the
same number of files as you created db.

things that fall into that category on this forum so I thought I would ask
anyway!! :-)

I use for analyzing trace files and also one large test db for a client and
for those the read-throughput is key to optimal perforance thus the desire
to spread the data across both drives.

Restore Problem (6.5)
I need to restore a SQL 6.5 database dump onto my laptop. Unfortunately I
don't have enought disk space, so work has kindly provided a USB external
hard disk. I can create the device on that disk, but what I try and restore
the database. It comes up with a 'Unable to write to server-side connection'
error message.
Any ideas ?
Cheers
MarkHi,
After creating the device , did you tried creating the database. The size
should be identical to the source database from where you received the dump
file.
Give me more information about,
1. Location of Dump file
2. Are you able to see the logical drives (newly attached external disk)
from explorer?
If you still have issues , try creating a table on the new database created.
Thanks
Hari.

restore of sql server question
I did a backup of my data base from my office, and copied the backup file (type of this file is called File). I copied this file to my laptop and restored the data base to my laptop. I had an older data base, so was looking for yesterday's data to be restored. but it didn't have my latest updates as of yesterday. the data of the back up was 1/30/04.
what else do I have to do, to assure the backup is done and picks up the data that was in the restored file??
any thoughts
bevI carry my DB back and forth to work quite frequently and I always do a complete Back Up to a new File Name that includes the date. (Example: BU010304) Before I restore it on my local machine, I always drop the old version of the DB.
That works for me, hope this is somehow helpful.
